Abstract: An in-depth interview study of students in a college level astronomy course revealed that 19 of the 20 students only understood gravity as a phenomenon, not as a universal force or as an explanation for a phenomenon. We report the results of our in-depth study. As a result of this study, one of us (HS) developed a teaching sequence which, as our preliminary data shows, leads to an improved understanding of gravity.
