Abstract: The nature of the circumstellar disk around β Pictoris has been extensively discussed in the literature during the past ten years. CO is in general a poor tracer for the gas content of such low-mass disks. Based on recent disk models (Kamp & van Zadelhoff 2001), which include a self-consistent calculation of the gas temperature, we find that C and C+ are very promising tracers for the gas around β Pictoris.
