Abstract: We have found strong evidence for an east-west reddening gradient across the globular cluster M4 in the sense that the reddening is larger to the west. Removal of the effects of this gradient tightens all sequences in the color-magnitude diagram of cluster members. Solution for the ratio of total to selective extinction yields R = 3.3 +/- 0.7, with the uncertainty apparently dominated by the intrinsic scatter in luminosity (due to stellar evolution) of HB stars.
