Abstract: High spectral resolution observations of Ca II line emission are reported from a large sample of pre-main sequence stars. The main result involves a characteristic pattern in the strengths and widths of the infrared triplet lines, which are attributed to a small temperature depression across the emitting region. If correct, this implies significant radiative cooling in the triplet lines, and possibly a link between the envolope velocity and temperature structures.
