Abstract: As calibrators of the extra-Galactic distance scale, novae have a number of advantages over Cepheids. More observations are, however, required to determine the intrinsic dispersion in the maximum magnitude versus rate-of-decline relation for novae. Supernovae of type Ia are found to have MB(max) = -18.45 + or - 0.2 + 5 log h with an observed dispersion of 0.8 mag. Supernovae of type II appear to exhibit a relationship between MB(max) and the intrinsic luminosity of their parent galaxy.
