Abstract: RR Lyr stars play an important role in distance determinations in the Local Group, and provide a distance scale that is independent of that obtained with Cepheids and other population I objects. This review surveys the current state of the calibration of the absolute magnitudes of RR Lyr stars and discusses recent observations of variables in other galaxies (M31, M33, NGC 147, and NGC 185). The review concludes with a brief discussion of the potential of the Space Telescope in extending the population II distance calibration.
