Abstract: QSOs at z ~ 2 − 3 become relic black holes in the nuclei of nearby galaxies. Using new near infrared spectroscopy we determine emission-line strengths of Hβ, optical Fe II and [O III]λ5007, and FWHM Hβ;. Thus we derive black hole masses and Eddington accretion ratios and compare these with emission-line indicators of black-hole fueling. All of our bright, high-z QSOs are inevitably biased towards high black-hole mass and high Eddington ratio. We show that the Boroson & Green inverse relationship between Fe II(optical) and [O III] strengths extends to z ~ 2 and depends on Eddington ratio rather than black-hole mass. The BALQSOs have stronger Fe II and weaker [O III] than non-BALQSOs, indicating a more plentiful fuel supply for similar Eddington ratio. We have observed the brighter SDSS BALQSOs in this investigation, and SDSS is providing many BALQSOs with a wide range of BAL characteristics needed for further such investigations.
