Abstract: We have analysed four X-ray observations of NGC 3516 taken with the RGS and EPIC-pn on board the XMM-Newton observatory. This AGN has shown significant flux and spectral variability between observations. We have investigated whether this is due to changing absorption by the warm absorber and/or is intrinsic to the source emission. It has previously been suggested that the passage of a warm absorption cloud, part of a clumpy disk wind in front of the source, was the cause of a significant dip in the X-ray lightcurve during one of the observations. We have shown that this scenario is unable to account for the variability and instead, intrinsic changes in the source continuum emission are the most likely explanation.
