Abstract: Recent studies in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths suggest that many interesting problems can be addressed when the ALMA project gets underway. We focus on two questions: (1) what type of objects can already be studied with subarcsecond resolution, and what type of questions will benefit from even higher angular resolution; (2) what type of studies can now be made in the submillimeter wavelengths and how the SMA and ALMA will help. In this paper, we present some results from our group as we prepare for early science with the SMA.
