Paper: Recipes for Making Short Period Binaries

Abstract: Three possible mechanisms of close binary formation are discussed: accretion during infall, disk braking, and tidal dissipation. Evidence exists that all these processes actually occur but it is not clear which one is dominating and how it can be modeled to explain the observed statistics of short period binaries. Available data related to close binary formation are reviewed and new observing programs are suggested.
