Abstract: We review progress in understanding how small N ensembles of young stars evolve and present detailed predictions for the IMF, binary properties and stellar kinematics resulting from recent hydrodynamic simulations. We show that the observed similarity between the core mass function and IMF does not imply a minor role for multiple fragmentation, and emphasise how key observations - particularly of the binarity of brown dwarfs - can place further constraints on viable models.
