Abstract: We present some new results from our ongoing projects studying the disk-halo connection of the interstellar medium and its dependence on the star formation rate in the underlying disk. A new survey of Hα halos around edge-on galaxies is described. It is shown that the presence of halo gas correlates with the star formation rate per unit area as deduced from far-infrared properties. The ionization and excitation problem for these thick layers of ionized hydrogen is briefly discussed.
