Abstract: We present initial results of a CCD survey aimed at obtaining the first extensive sample of very low-mass pre-main sequence objects in the Taurus star forming region. Candidate objects for follow up observations were selected from the color-magnitude diagrams. In medium resolution spectra we identified nine new low-mass pre main sequence stars. Using the optical photometry and spectra we derive effective temperatures and luminosities for the new T Tauri stars. Three of our new T Tauri stars have masses in the range 0.07 <~ M/Msun <~ 0.1, making them the faintest and reddest pre-main sequence stars yet identified in this star-forming region.
