Abstract: We present analysis of near infrared (2.15-2.35 microns) spectra and JHKL' photometry of 40 stars in the young cluster NGC 2024. These data are used to estimate the effective temperatures and absolute K-band luminosities of the stars and construct an H-R diagram for the cluster. We discuss the complications introduced by the effects of excess circumstellar emission, reddening, and surface gravity on the observed spectral features and fluxes of young stars. To account for these effects, we have developed an analysis procedure which imposes a self-consistency criterion that both the observed photometry and spectral feature strengths are consistent with: the amount and spectral energy distribution of excess emission, extinction, the stellar effective temperature, and the surface gravity of young stars. Preliminary results for NGC 2024 show that the cluster is fairly young (average age ~0.5 Myr) and coeval. However, these results may be biased by the presence of unseen binary companions and our flux limited sample.
