Abstract: We shall review the nature of the dust found in circumstellar environments with a particular emphasis on the main dust contributors to the interstellar medium (ISM), that is, evolved stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). We discuss the identification of dust from an observational point of view and confront these results to the information gained from the study of meteorites. Elemental abundances found in dust grains are derived and we review the various scenarios responsible for dust formation and elemental depletion. Finally, we briefly discuss the role of certain elements in the context of dust formation and evolution.
