Abstract: Our current knowledge of carbon production in low- and intermediate-mass stars as predicted by stellar models is presented, and compared to both the luminosity functions of carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds and the location of nearby Tc-rich S stars in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram. The disagreeing predictions of available AGB models concerning the issue of carbon star formation is also discussed.
