Abstract: We present some preliminary results regarding the investigation of a new empirical method which allows to determine the O/H abundance when the electronic temperature determination is not possible. This method can be both an alternative and a complement to the known $R23$ method (Pagel et al. 1979), but its importance comes from the fact that it does not require flux calibrated spectra, as it employs line equivalent widths instead of line intensities. Such advantage added to the requirement of a minimum of spectral information makes it a potentially useful method to study the O/H abundances in distant H ii galaxies.
