Abstract: Solar-cycle changes in mode frequencies were first detected early in the history of helioseismic observations. Since then, it has been well established that the properties—frequency, width, amplitude, and possibly asymmetry—of helioseismic modes all vary with the magnetic activity level, on both local and global scales. Most of these changes seem to reflect changes in the near-surface properties of the Sun associated with the presence of active regions. This review will cover both historic and recent results, and consider the various mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the changes. Finally, we will consider attempts to detect changes caused by magnetic fields below the surface.
