Abstract: New numerical procedures are introduced for the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) computation of turbulent flows using a large eddy simulation (LES) approach. The standard AMR technique of linear interpolation of coarse grid data to obtain fine grid values is shown to introduce a spurious excitation of the turbulence spectrum. The conservative cell averaging of fine grid data to update coarse grid data has a similar effect. Interpolation and restriction procedures that eliminate this effect are introduced. These procedures can be modified to excite the small scales resolvable on new fine grids in accordance with a known turbulent energy spectrum (e.g. Kolmogorov spectrum).
