Abstract:	ESO develops in collaboration with the instrument consortia the instrument control software and data processing pipelines for the VLT and VLTI instruments. As astronomical instruments become more complex, there is a growing need for more comprehensive data processing to be performed directly by the instrument control software. The Common Library for Image Processing (CLIP) has been developed as a flexible and scalable framework to provide an interface to pipeline data processing capabilities for the instrument acquisition process. This paper gives an overview of the design of the CLIP and how it copes with the constraints and requirements of the 2nd Generation Instruments at the ESO Very Large Telescope.
