Abstract: High proper motion stars comprise one of the premier samples to investigate to discover nearby stars. Therefore, the complete characterization (astrometry, photometry, and spectroscopy) of the highest proper motion stars is essential. We present the current status of our project to characterize the complete sample of stars with μ > 1.0″/yr, in which we have already discovered four stars within 10 pc (the RECONS sample) and 22 additional stars within 25 pc (the NStars sample). During this study, we have revealed new subdwarfs/extreme-subdwarfs by determining accurate trigonometric parallaxes, and have used spectroscopic observations to confirm their subdwarf nature. In addition, we have identified the first two M subdwarf/white dwarf binaries.
