Abstract: We are studying the response of the interstellar medium (ISM) to galaxy/galaxy interactions with a particular view to constraining the relative timescales of gas infall and star formation. We have reproduced the observed HI dynamics and morphology in the closely interacting, starburst galaxies NGC 3395/6 (Arp 270) by means of an N-body simulation including both non-collisional stellar and collisional gas particles. By following the evolution of the gaseous ISM in the models we predict the star formation history which can be quantitatively compared to observational tracers. In this way we aim to constrain the nature of the ISM and the dynamical parameters which are important in defining the distribution and efficiency of interaction-induced star formation.
