Abstract: I review recent progress in numerically simulating the formation and evolution of galaxies. Special emphasis is given to results based on high-resolution gas dynamical simulations that incorporate the effects of star formation and related feedback processes. Applications address the origin of galaxy morphologies and the properties of high-redshift galaxies. Connections between the population of high-redshift galaxies and Lyα absorption systems are drawn.
