Abstract: We have developed a modern equation of state for the totally ionized dense Coulomb plasmas present in the cores of white dwarf stars. Such plasmas, composed mostly of degenerate electrons and classical ions, can be found in the liquid or the solid phase. In order to take into account the progress in physics and in numerical techniques, we have upgraded most of the free energy terms which appeared in the previously available equation of state developed by Lamb (1974). The latter has been widely used in the literature up to now. The inclusion of this new version in our white dwarf evolutionary models allows us to face the new challenges posed by the requirements of quantitative asteroseismology and of high precision cosmochronology.
