Abstract: The different time-scales occurring inside galaxies and in their environment are reviewed. The overall picture about galaxies that has taken shape in the recent years is that galaxies are evolutive structures that can no longer be seen as dynamically frozen over several Gyr, as it was commonly assumed in the 60's and 70's. Internal processes such as the secular inflation of disks and bulges, bar formation and destruction appear as ineluctable if Newtonian dynamics is consistently applied. External processes including warps, accretion and mergers occur over several Gyr, such that the often taken assumption that extended dark halos are well virialized over more than 100 kpc is questionable.
