Abstract: The long-term variability of multiwavelength blazar emission can be interpreted, by following the helical-jet model by Villata & Raiteri (1999), as due to the orientation variation of a curved jet, possibly caused by the orbital motion of the parent black hole in a binary system. We show here a comparison between observations and model predictions for the quasi-periodic radio light curve and the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the BL Lac object AO 0235+16: while the helix rotation well explains the periodicity of the main radio outbursts and the SED variability, the interspersed minor events could be interpreted either as due to some local distortions of the helical structure or by ascribing them to other phenomena contributing to the source emission.
