Abstract: The significance of a detailed knowledge of the atmosphere of a star for a proper understanding of its interior is illustrated and discussed. It is concluded that significant progress in the understanding of stellar atmospheres is needed in order to match methods, discoveries and needs in the study of stellar internal structure and evolution.
