Abstract: Extensive imaging and spectroscopic observations of the galaxy cluster environments of quasars and other AGN indicate that environment plays an important role in the evolution of AGN activity. Imaging studies provide evidence that radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars prefer significantly different environments and that radio quasars in rich environments evolve approximately six times faster than their counterparts in poor environments. This rapid evolution is consistent with radio-loud quasars and radio galaxies in rich clusters forming a continuous evolutionary sequence since z approximately 0.7. Spectroscopic observations of galaxies in these environments indicate that this evolution is accompanied by a significant rise in the cluster velocity dispersion, in qualitative agreement with scenarios which link galaxy-galaxy interaction with the triggering of AGN activity.
