Abstract: Deep CCD surveys to 29 mag from 0.32 to 0.9 micron wavelength reveal an isotropic population of very blue galaxies. There are over 200,000 of these objects per square degree. The redshift of this population appears to be in the range 1-3. New techniques for ultra-deep imaging with CCDs are described. The resulting extragalactic background radiation from the UV to the near-IR due to this population of objects is shown. There apparently was darkness for at least 2 x 10 exp 9 years prior to this active phase of stellar burning seen in these galaxies.
