Abstract:	We present the results of a survey for Lyα emitting starburst galaxies around z = 3. We have conducted the survey with the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope in 2003-2004. Our survey covers three fields centered on QSOs targetting redshifts of previously known damped Lyα absorber systems. In total we have detected and spectroscopically confirmed 51 Lyα emitting galaxies in the three fields. Here, we focus our attention on the luminosity function of the Lyα emitting galaxies and their contribution to the star formation density.
