Abstract: This article introduces the Science Planning Operational Tool (SPOT), designed and developed by the RHEA Group team located at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESA/ESAC). This team is responsible for the Payload Operations and Software Development Service for ESA Planetary Missions.

SPOT is a collaborative framework designed to support the planning of scientific payload operations for Planetary missions throughout their entire lifecycle, including the extended cruise phases. Currently in use by the BepiColombo and JUICE missions, SPOT is set to be adapted for other missions, such as the planetary defense mission HERA.

SPOT provides operational capabilities for generating science observations based on geometry conditions. It is employed to define scenarios for different phases of the mission, schedule observations according to opportunity windows, and simulate the scientific payload timelines along with the main spacecraft resources utilized, such as power consumption or generated data volume. SPOT can also generate payload operational products using the Command Request File format (CRF), ensuring compliance with the tools at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC): Mission Planning System (MPS), Mission Control System (MCS), and Mission Information Database (MIB).

Additionally, SPOT incorporates advanced 2D/3D visualization tools capable of displaying, among other things, geospatial datasets or spacecraft attitude. These tools support operators and scientific users in the planning process, providing, for example, surface coverage data results. All information and generated products are centralized and version-controlled, with data privacy and confidentiality ensured through user authorization and authentication processes.
