Abstract: It is shown that electron impact ionization from the excited levels which principal quantum number lays in the range 2⩽k⩽6 brings about non-stationary occupation Hydrogen atom when the gas is cooling behind the shock front in a stellar atmosphere. Hydrogen occupation numbers depend on the whole evolution of the gas layer, not only on the current values of temperature and electron density.
