Abstract: Almost 2000 planets and thousands of planet candidates have been found since the discovery of the first extrasolar planet 51 Peg two decades ago. It is high time to start talking about a classification system. This classification (taxonomy) has to be easily to interpret and should capture the most relevant information about extrasolar planets. We have focused on the classification by Plávalová, which uses four main parameters covering the mass, semi-major axis, temperature, eccentricity, plus one optional parameter. We also propose some changes that allow for some simplification and the classification of more planets.
