Abstract: Using new measurements of the longitudinal (effective) magnetic field Be on the 1-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory and all the published data, we investigated the magnetic field variability of the Ap star γ Equ. Time series of magnetic data consist of 372 Be points spread over 24 488 days, i.e., 67 years. Various methods of period determination were examined in the actual case when the length of the observed time series is rather short and amounts to only ∼69% of the period. We argue that fitting of a sine curve to the observed Be points by the least square method yields the most reliable period in such a case. Therefore, the best period of long-term magnetic variations of γ Equ, i.e., the rotation period is Prot=35394.2 days=96.97 ± 3.21 years.
