Abstract: We examine an 8μm IRAC image of the grand design spiral galaxy Messier 81 using a new method to determine pitch angles of m–armed spiral structures as a function of radius. In contrast to traditional Fourier transform, we calculate the correlation of the original image with m–armed synthetic spirals in (ln R,θ) plane. For each (ln R,θ) position, we determine the correlation as a function of the pitch angle of the synthetic spirals. M81 presents spiral arms segments of different m and pitch angles at different radial positions.
