Abstract: The late stages of a merger between two gas-rich galaxies are often characterized by a high concentration of dense gas and active starbursts near the nuclear region. We are continuing a comprehensive study of such systems in the local universe, focusing on the detailed observations of the molecular gas component and its relationship to the on-going star formation. We compare these to active star-forming regions in nearby galaxies in order to better understand the underlying physical processes.
