Abstract: In 1984 Conti grouped together the P Cygni, Hubble-Sandagei and S Dor variable stars into a new class the Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). His unification was based on the fact that the underlying mechanism for the variability and the stars parameters are similar and the only difference that remained seemed the host galaxy. A significant subset of LBVs is known to be surrounded by circumstellar nebulae. A characterization of the present known set of LBVs in the Local Volume will be given as well as a categorization of their evolutionary status. In particular I will address LBVs with nebulae and discuss what we learn from morphologies and kinematics of the nebulae about parameters and possible instabilities of the stars.
