Abstract: Measuring the magnetic fields throughout the solar atmosphere, from the photosphere through the chromosphere to the corona, is one of the main goals of the upcoming large aperture solar telescopes. The observational requirements and the need for compromises will be discussed followed by a brief review of some of the available diagnostics for chromospheric and coronal field measurements. The need for a wide range of temporal and spatial scales as well as wavelength ranges in future solar observations will also be considered.
