Paper: The Composition of Planetary Atmospheres: An Historical Perspective
Volume: 450, Molecules in the Atmospheres of Extrasolar Planets

Abstract: A brief review of the composition of planetary atmospheres is given. By adopting a historical perspective, and without pretending to exhaustiveness, we attempt to show how the evolution of observational knowledge progressively gave access to insight into the main physical processes ruling planetary atmospheres, and to illustrate the synergy between observations from the ground and from space.
