Abstract: H2 formation rate and excitation are derived in diffuse molecular clouds from FUSE H2 column densities by using a model of chemical and thermal balance in photon-illuminated interstellar gas. The formation rate appears to be relatively constant and the H2 excitation evidences the existence of a warm component of collisionally excited gas within the molecular gas.
