Abstract: I first discuss the role of “Solar Polarization” in the context of the development of modern astrophysics, and then show how a few failed projects stimulated the advance that led to the discovery of the Second Solar Spectrum and the development of ZIMPOL. The failed LEST project also helped pave the way for major high-resolution telescope projects like GREGOR, ATST, and EST. I conclude with a small poem in honor of this successful Workshop.
