Abstract: We present a multi-wavelength study of the Southern Coalsack and its hot halo. The Coalsack is a well-defined dark cloud at a reliably determined distance, shown by ROSAT imaging to be surrounded by a hot halo. We have used FUSE and HST/STIS data to show that the halo contains O VI, and other ions in high ionization states. Based on location and energetics we argue that the heating is by the hot interior of the Upper Centaurus-Lupus Superbubble. Combining O VI & C IV data we show that the most likely energy transport mechanism between the hot and cold gas is conduction. However, the transport does not seem to be spatially dependent on the strong magnetic field (∼90 μG), derived from high sampling-density optical polarimetry.
