Abstract: Is working with Native Americans business as usual? We live in a project-based world that operates on three-to-five-year grants. A long term commitment can be next to impossible to keep, even if you have the best of intentions. Are there things one “must know” before approaching an indigenous population? How is it best to evaluate projects and programs involving Native Americans? In the NASA and the Navajo Nation project, which will turn five in January, 2010, we have compiled some key lessons learned that we hope will inform and encourage future partnerships between the space science education and Native American communities.
