Abstract: Spectropolarimetry of the limbs of the solar system gas planets shows an enhanced polarization in the methane bands compared to the adjacent continuum. The effect is particularly strong at the poles of Jupiter and the limb of Uranus, but it is also present in Neptune and the poles of Saturn. It can be concluded that enhanced polarization in the methane bands will be a common feature in extrasolar giant planets.
