Abstract: We present various suggestions for the study of flares (fast emission variations, heating mechanisms), prominences (fine structure, magnetic field, energy balance), and sunspots (umbral structure, heating mechanisms, depth and structure of the penumbra, Evershed flow). From these cases we derive the requirements for the future European Solar Telescope: spectropolarimetric capabilities, high signal-to-noise ratio, multi-line spectroscopy, high spatial and temporal resolution.
