Abstract: Combining HST and GALEX imaging with Keck spectroscopy of two z = 0.5 galaxy clusters, we identify and study the ‘passive spiral’ galaxies, a peculiar class of spirals whose spectra show no signs of star formation. Studying their stellar populations in detail, we have been able to conclusively identify passive spirals as galaxies in the process of transforming into S0 galaxies. Differences between the two clusters in both the timescales and spatial location of this conversion process allow us to conclude that some passive spirals are generated via ram-pressure stripping by the ICM.
