Abstract: Ground-based surveys using small automated telescopes to monitor thousands of field star in photometry are now discovering several transiting exoplanets per year. Five transiting planets have also been identified among those found by radial velocity surveys of bright stars. Altogether, the present sample of known transiting planets is striking in its variety. The mass, size, composition and orbital distance of these planets follow no simple rules. With the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, it has become possible to measure some properties of the atmosphere of the brightest transiting planets. A picture of their emission and transmission spectra is beginning to emerge.
