Abstract: The observed relationship between effective temperature and helium abundance in hot subdwarfs is not currently understood. In the Teff − log(He/H) plane two separate trends are seen with approximately the same slope. We present here two hypotheses: one explaining the trend using known physics; and one explaing the two trends as two different yet related populations. The implications of these hypotheses are discussed. Finally some speculation is presented in relation to the existence of the over-abundance of 3He in a handful of sdBs.
