Paper: Chapter 53: How to Build a Virtual Observatory SkyNode

Abstract: The Virtual Observatory SkyNode protocol allows for sophisticated SQL-like queries of astronomical databases including cross-correlations of tables stored in multiple sites. While SkyNodes are powerful resources, the protocol is not well documented and there has been limited software to support the development of SkyNode sites outside the Microsoft SQLServer/.Net environment. This chapter describes how a SkyNode works and introduces a Java implementation of SkyNodes that can be used with virtually any relational database system.
