Abstract: To date about 100 giant planets have been discovered around nearby sun-like stars. About 50 of these have received detailed spectroscopic analysis. They tend to be more metal-rich than the average nearby field star. We review three possible explanations proposed to explain this pattern and whether extant data help to choose among them.
